QUEM SOMOS Gerações apaixonadas pelo Douro WHO WE ARE Generations passionate about the Douro

Alfredo Leopoldo Holzer (1882-1942)

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, he joined the Cálem family, well-established Port wine producers and shippers. He fell in love with the Douro region and in the early 1930s purchased Quinta de Val da Figueira. This property became the central part of the current estate and the adjacent vineyards, inherited by his wife Júlia Cálem, make up the total area. The current main house and chapel were built during his lifetime.

Alfredo E. Cálem Hoelzer (1916-2007)

Recognized as one of the most respected Port wine tasters of his generation, he worked for Cálem for over 50 years. Almost all of the replanting and expansion of the vineyard area at Quinta de Val da Figueira was carried out on his initiative and under his guidance. In the mid-1980s, with the change in the law that allowed independent producers to sell and export their own brands, the estate was one of the first properties to produce and market its own brand of 10 Year Old Port and Extra Dry White Port. Quinta de Val da Figueira owes its current status to its astute and low-profile management.

João Cálem Hoelzer (1950-)

Current owner, João Cálem Hoelzer, has been working in the Port wine production and trade for 46 years. For 22 years, he was a member of the tasting panel team at one of the most prestigious Port wine companies. In addition to a few years studying and working abroad, he now has almost half a hundred harvests under his belt at Quinta de Val da Figueira. He took over the day-to-day management of the estate in the mid-1990s and has been full time since 2009.

Marta Cálem Hoelzer (1996-)

Marta Cálem Hoelzer, a descendant of dedicated winegrowers, graduated in Agronomic Engineering and later took a post-graduate course in Oenology and Viticulture. As well as working for companies in the Douro region, she has had some international harvest experiences in Bordeaux (France), Marlborough (New Zealand), Rutherglen (Australia) and Stellenbosch (South Africa) in order to increase her knowledge and now put it into practice at Quinta de Val da Figueira. Marta and her father work with the focus of preserving this legacy by highlighting the Port wine production that continues to be the backbone of the DOC Douro red wine process.
