Generous land
Quinta de Val da Figueira has 16 hectares of vineyards planted at an average altitude of 270 metres and facing north, east and south. The vineyard's terrain is structured in terraces of one or two rows of vines, vertical rows rising up the steeper hillsides and old vines. The remaining 19 hectares of the estate, in addition to the fig trees that give it its name, are occupied by orchards of various citrus fruits, such as different types of orange trees, tangerine trees, grapefruit trees, and lemon trees.
The higher areas and the estate's boundaries feature a mixed shrub polyculture of olive trees, almond trees, arbutus, junipers, mastic trees, and sumac, interspersed with cork oaks and oaks at higher altitudes. These edges provide a distinctive flora and are essential for maintaining fauna balance and plant health in our vineyards, in addition to giving the honey produced here a unique, wilder touch, an original expression of the place.
The wines are produced exclusively from our own grapes of the highest-quality varieties: Rabigato, Malvasia Fina, and Códega do Larinho for the white wines; Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, as well as old vines producing a "field blend" for the red wines. Our wines are vinified traditionally in stone lagares, a practice still considered by the most renowned Port wine producers to be the best method for producing high-quality Port wines. All wines are bottled on the estate.
